As part of its ongoing commitment to educate our youth about the importance of water, the Bethpage Water District recently hosted Girl Scout Troop 730 for a tour of their Plant No. 6 location on Saturday, March 4, 2023. A group of Girl Scouts and their parents were guided through an hour long tour led by Bethpage Water District Superintendent Mike Boufis where they were taught about the water cycle, where our water comes from and how water hits their home’s tap. Learning lessons were embraced by the troop, especially around the importance of water conservation and what they can do at their homes to be a water-conserver and make a difference to help create a sustainable environment.
During the tour, troop members saw and were taught how water treatment methods work to ensure everyone experiences great tasting quality drinking water every day. Troop members were able to witness firsthand all the behind-the-scenes technology that brings water to the surface, giving them a better understanding of what the District does to delivery high quality water to all consumers of Bethpage.
“To see these troop members so engaged while learning about their drinking water makes tours like these so special,” said Superintendent Boufis. “Our hope is that these young children will have a greater appreciation for what it takes to deliver high quality drinking water. Most importantly, we shared a lot of fun and helpful conservation tips that they can easily apply at home that the children were excited to learn.”
Each troop member was given a gift bag with a Bethpage Water District water bottle, coloring book, stickers, yoyo, reusable bag, and a few more notable items. Most importantly, each earned their “Water Patch” based on their learning experience with the Bethpage Water District and how they can help conserve water in their communities.
