Fact: Bethpage Water District DOES NOT and HAS NOT ever added fluoride to the water. It was discovered in the early 20th century that fluoride had a positive impact to dental health and hygiene. There were specific areas in the mid west that had naturally occurring fluoride in the water and the people in those areas had better dental reports, Ultimately, it was determined that fluoride, in very low doses, would be an overall benefit to dental care.
Shortly thereafter, it was added to toothpaste and other oral care products. At that point, some water suppliers opted to add it to the water as an added health benefit. The Bethpage Water District feels that it is up to everyone's own discretion where they receive their fluoride from; therefore, it is not added to our finished DRINKING WATER. If taken in higher doses, it can actually harm teeth and cause them to rot and decay and also damage bones and joints.
