What are Volatile Organic Compounds?

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOC’s as they are more commonly known, are a group of compounds that have been found in the ground water due to decades of pollution. They can be man-made or naturally occurring. Most of them are solvents, de-greasers or the remnants of these items and have broken down into more simplified chemicals. The EPA has determined that many of these compounds can be dangerous to human health if ingested in higher concentrations and volumes over a long period of time. There are more than 50 compounds monitored in the group of VOC’s which are derived from the degradation or break down of solvents poured in to the ground. They can be efficiently removed through aeration processes including air stripping and/or granular activated carbon (GAC). Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) is also an effective method that Bethpage Water District uses to ensure that the total amount of VOC's are removed.
