Bethpage Water District Announces Poster Contest Winners

The Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners Theresa M. Black, John R. Sullivan and John F. Coumatos recently announced the winners of the District’s informative poster contest in partnership with the Bethpage School District. The District received more than 200 submissions to the contest from fourth-grade students revolving around the central theme of Overflowing Bethpage Pride, But Conserving Bethpage Water. In a ceremony held in the school, first, second and third-place winners were announced and given commemorative trophies and certificates to celebrate their accomplishment.

“We are overwhelmingly proud of the support from our community, schools and their participation in this poster contest,” said Commissioner Theresa M. Black. “We were excited to once again work with the Bethpage School District and the terrific fourth grade students this year. We were ecstatic that students, teachers and members of the community have taken an interest in learning about our most important resource.”

Bethpage Water District Commissioners addressed winning students, along with staff from the Bethpage School District to congratulate students for their winning efforts and hand out commemorative trophies and certificates. The winning students’ posters were on display during the award ceremony as students were called individually to be congratulated for their immense accomplishments. The Bethpage Water District annual poster contest is intended to encourage students to learn more about their water supply and the power they have to influence it, today, and in the future.

“Educating our youth about the water supply is crucial to better serving our community,” said Commissioner John F. Coumatos. “It is paramount for all people to understand the importance of preserving our water supply, and we take pride in our ability to make young Bethpage residents aware of its importance. In the coming years, we will need to think of new and innovative ways to better protect our water, and these students will be the ones to take on the challenge.”

The winners of the Bethpage Water District Water Conservation Poster Contest include: Charles Campagne Elementary School (CCS) fourth graders Jonathan Chen (first place), Matthew Cusumano (second place) and Keira Penge (third place). Kramer Lane Elementary School fourth graders Kate Cusack (first place), Yui Tamaki (second place) and Rose Arrabito (third place).  Central Boulevard Elementary School fourth graders Maria Nickolopoulos (first place), Anisa Rahman (second place) and Sienna Grippaldi (third place).

“It was challenging to choose only nine out of the more than 200 students in the Bethpage School District who submitted entries to this year’s poster contest,” said Commissioner John R. Sullivan. “An interest in the community’s water supply is essential to its future protection. We aim to encourage students to learn more about their water supply in hopes of inspiring the water plant operators and engineers of tomorrow.”
